Ravintsara or Ravensara aromatica? Oh the confusion. Let's
set it straight, because this is such a valuable essential oil that I do
believe it should now be in your essential oil medicine chest ... or Good
Medicine Tin®!
The word "Ravintsara" means "good leaf"
and it grows in Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world off
the coast of Africa. I initially used this oil in the early 1990's when
it as called "Ravensara aromatica", and this name is still used
today. The confusion is over two trees in Madagascar providing essential
oils. One is termed "Ravensara anisata" and the other has been
called in the past by Aromatherapists "Ravensara aromatica".
Botanists have decided these 2 names are really one in the same. The
essential oil smells like aniseed, so you know it if you have it.
What was often referred to as "Ravensara
aromatica" is from the other tree. The natives refer to the oil as
"Voaravintsara or Ravintsara". The botanical name is
"Cinnamomum camphora" and that is what you need to know. We use
it's true name "Ravintsara".
The reason this is getting explored, explained and
cleared-up is because the cineole content in the essential oil Ravintsara
(Cinnamomum camphora) is valuable to our health. It is regarded as one of
the top anti-viral, antiseptic and expectorant essential oils. A top
essential oil to fight infections, it's right up there with Tea Tree and
Eucalyptus.
Use Ravintsara to keep you healthy and protect your health
during cold & flu season, travel, and when you feel your immune system
is compromised. Inhale from the bottle, use in a diffuser or on a cotton
ball for your chest pocket. Combine with Jojoba for a bath oil or body
blend. The aroma is a gentle Eucalyptus type smell.
Bottom line: true Ravintsara essential oil was incorrectly
called Ravensara aromatica, and often still is today. Just be sure to get
the one with the botanical name Cinnamomum camphora from Madagascar.
Many top Aromatherapists in the world believe that
Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora) is one of the most valuable essential
oils. As long as supply can keep up with demand, it has the potential to
be right up there with Lavender and Tea Tree. I agree. It's now on our
pure essential oil list. 10% off through August 15th!. Happy "Good
Leaf" Health to you from the land of Madagascar!
Be Gentle with Yourself ... Life is Precious.
